March 2014
Letter from the Chairman

It's hard to believe that March is already here.  Just last week, I walked outside and could smell the sweet blossoms of the Mountain Laurel bushes.  It reminded me...this is the time of the year I get outside and be more active.  Just as Spring invokes that thought, I believe we can apply this to our organization. Our community outreach program is growing, as is our membership base. Let us continue this trend of growth and renewal and make AAHA better than it has ever been.

2014 Chairman

News From the SACVB
New Attractions and Savings await San Antonio visitors this Spring!

An average temperature of 70 degrees will help San Antonio vacationers thaw out this spring. Whether it's families looking for an attraction-filled getaway, adventurers looking for outdoor adventures or foodies looking to expand their palate, San Antonio makes the short list for exciting spring getaways. Plus, SAVE (the San Antonio Vacation Experience) makes spring travel even more affordable with discounts to top hotels, attractions and more.

This spring brings many activities, events and celebrations to the Alamo City including:

  • A Newly Renovated Guinness World Records Museum (March) - a revamp to the museum will provide guests a chance to break six different Guinness World Records during their visit. At designated times, the museum will have Guinness World Record Adjudicators on staff to judge record attempts and award certificates, if successful, making the museum the first in the world to provide this opportunity year-round;
  • The San Antonio Zoo'sZootennial Plaza Carousel Opening (March 7) - part of a 100th birthday celebration of the third-largest zoo in the nation, a custom-designed carousel that features figurines of animals found at the zoo will be unveiled;
  • Fiesta San Antonio (April 10 - 27) - this celebration of San Antonio's rich culture and heritage packs more than 100 events into 18 days. Traditionally 11 days, this annual, more than 120-year-old celebration is extended in 2014 around the Easter holiday;
  • The Opening of SeaWorld San Antonio's Roa's Aviary (May) - SeaWorld's addition of a 13,500-square-foot aviary featuring about 300 birds representing more than 50 species will allow guests to float, wade or walk among the tropical birds;
  • Culinaria (May 14 - 18) - this series of culinary and wine-centric events features internationally renowned vintners, top Texas wine producers and San Antonio's top chefs; and
  • The Witte Museum's H-E-B Body Adventure Opening (May 24) - this renovation to  the museum's existing H-E-B Science Treehouse will feature state-of-the-art interactive centers to inspire visitors to get up and moving, make healthy changes and live a more balanced lifestyle - all in a fun way.

In addition, it is an exciting time for the historical aspect of San Antonio as the city's Spanish colonial missions (including the Alamo) have entered the global spotlight as a World Heritage Site Nominee. Organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Heritage List recognizes the most significant cultural and natural sites in the world. Included are Stonehenge, the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Egypt. If awarded, the missions would be the first World Heritage Site in the State of Texas and only the 22nd in the United States.

Savings are also blooming this spring in San Antonio with the SAVE program. SAVE provides visitors more than $1,600 in deals to 25 lodging properties, including hotels and bed and breakfasts, and coupons for 47 can't-miss attractions. SAVE discounts are available at www.visitsanantonio.com or on-the-go by downloading the SAVE in San Antonio APP.

Below are a few additional spring events, with which visitors can fill up their custom-made trip itinerary on www.visitsanantonio.com.

Society Government Meeting Professionals
Get connected to government meetings-plug into SGMP!

The San Antonio Alamo Chapter (SAAC) of the Society of Government Professionals (SGMP) is excited to be a part of the San Antonio hospitality industry specializing in Government Meetings. SGMP is an association comprised of individuals involved in planning government meetings and those who provide meeting facilities or services to those planners.  Our membership includes federal, state and local government and contract planners who manage meetings on a full or part-time basis.

Our mission is simple - to enhance and promote the knowledge and expertise of government meeting professionals.  SGMP has stayed true to that mission for over 30 years.  The Society has over 30 chapters and offers education, networking and resources both locally and nationally.

The SAAC chartered in October 2011 with over 60 members and provides education and training to members in the greater San Antonio area.  Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. at various local venues throughout the city.  Planners can attend their first meeting free.  For additional information, please visit our website, www.sgmpsanantonio.com or contact Linda Jackson, SAAC President at 512-731-4524.

Happy Tails To You!
Dinosaur George to headline Morgan's Wonderland Spring Break entertainment!

As an added bonus during spring break 2014, Morgan's Wonderland guests will enjoy special entertainment that's free with park admission.

This will include amazing animals from Happy Tails Entertainment on Wednesday, March 12,  and three days of popular "Dinosaur George," who'll transform the theme park's Event Center into a natural-history museum filled with artifacts from prehistoric times.

"We're delighted to offer special spring break entertainment in addition to our more than 25 attractions including rides, playscapes, gardens and other fun elements," said Ron Morander, Morgan's Wonderland general manager.

On Wednesday, March 12, Happy Tails will present live animals from around the world in an educational, entertaining and interactive show.  Animals starring in the 1 p.m., hour-long show will include an alpaca, African porcupine, ring-tailed lemur, wallaby, coatimundi and kinkajou, to name a few.  Audience members will be able to see them up-close and direct questions to the Happy Tails animal specialists.

During park operating hours Friday through Sunday, March 14-16, "Dinosaur George" Blasing will present "Touch-A-Saurus," an array of touchable displays featuring creatures that roamed the earth long ago.  The self-taught paleontologist and animal behaviorist will talk about prehistoric times and answer park guests' questions.

Backed by 35 years of study and research, Blasing has appeared live before more than 2 million people, and he has lectured at some 2,800 museums, schools and public events.  He is the writer, co-creator and host of "Jurassic Fight Club" on the History Channel.

Morgan's Wonderland will be open daily March 7 through 16. The latest information on operating days and hours of operation, admissions and special activities can be found at www.MorgansWonderland.com

Riverwalk Royalty
Paseo del Rio crowns new royalty

The Paseo del Rio held their annual fundraiser for King & Queen of the Riverwalk this past weekend. Several of our very own members and Board Members vied for the royalty positions. James Boone of Dick's Last Resort won King of the Riverwalk and Brandy Lopez of Latin Fusion TV was crowned Queen of the Riverwalk. Our very own board member Robert Sanchez of The Palm won Prince of the Riverwalk. AAHA member Kristy Hernandez from Howl at the Moon was crowned Duchess, Nancy Kilpo of Grand Hyatt was crowned Princess and Tina Stolhandske of River City Run was crowned Lady in Waiting.

As if the stellar cast of Riverwalk royalty couldn't get any better, our very own AAHA President, David Uminski, was crowned King Rex of the Mardi Gras parade. Congratulations to all of the winners! Your campaign and contributions help preserve and maintain our beautiful San Antonio Riverwalk!
