June 2015
Letter from the Chairman

In the month of June, we welcome summertime. For the travel and tourism industry, this is our favorite time of year. School is officially out, the sun is shining and bright and families are on vacation and spending money in our fabulous city. However, a recent study by the U.S. Travel Association indicated that Americans fail to use 429 million vacation days and with those days, $160 billion in economic opportunity is lost.* The statistics are staggering. We are forfeiting our earned benefits and essentially working for free. Make sure to take time off this summer season and enjoy your hard earned vacation days. You've earned it!

Check out some of the exciting things going on throughout the city.

Sincerely,

Karen Bippert, CTA
2015 Chairman

San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo!
Giving Back to the Kids & Community!

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo is committing a record breaking $12.2 million to help further the educational and agricultural goals of the youth of Texas. This is the largest amount given to date by the organization. Since inception, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has contributed $160.1 million.

Keith Martin, Executive Director and CEO, made the announcement to the volunteers at the organization's annual membership meeting, on May 19th at the Expo Hall of the Freeman Coliseum/AT&T Center grounds in San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Martin said, "It is this moment in the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo that gives us the greatest joy-helping educate the youth of Texas. We receive incredible monetary support from our sponsors. Every person who attends is contributing to the cause. And frankly, there is no volunteer force on earth like the one we have here. We live in an amazing community."

The monies awarded were raised primarily through fundraising events and the annual eighteen-day San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo held in February. The $12.2 million will be awarded to the youth of Texas in the form of scholarships, grants and endowments. Also included in the giving amount are funds from the junior livestock auctions, youth western art auction, calf scramble program and show premiums.

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has a rich tradition and history of stewardship to the community and the agriculture industry. With a clear vision of the future, a successful past and continual dedication from over 6,000 volunteers, the organization will continue to provide family friendly entertainment, be a pillar of strength for the community and continue the tradition of supporting the youth of Texas.

The 2016 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo will be held February 11th - 28th at the AT&T Center/Freeman Coliseum Grounds.

Spring has Sprung - Time to Clean!
Goodwill Industry

Are you running out of space in your closets, garage and other storage spots in your home? Do you have piles of books and clothes you don't want anymore? Just box or bag those items you no longer need and drop them off at any Goodwill donation station. Your donation to Goodwill helps us change lives through the power of work.Goodwill San Antonio creates jobs for Being a job creator is easy! Just follow these three steps.

Step 1: Gather Your Stuff

Walk around your home and collect items you and your family no longer need - that shirt that's been hanging in the back of your closet for three years, the toy trike your five-year old has outgrown, the holiday gift from grandma you never quite found a place for, etc.

Step 2: Give Them a Look Over

Donating items that are in working condition, contain all of their pieces and parts, and are free of stains and rips is the best way to ensure that your goods do the most good. While we accept most clothing and household items, there are a few things we can't accept - such as items that have been recalled, banned or do not meet current safety standards. In addition, if you're looking to donate specialty items such as computers, vehicles or mattresses, it's best to give your local Goodwill agency a call first to find out any rules or restrictions around these items.

Step 3: Go to Goodwill

Ready to drop off your items? Just use our locator at the top of the page or on our homepage  and check the box for "Donation Site" to find your nearest Goodwill drop-off location. Donating a lot of items? Some Goodwills offer donation pickup services - give yours a call to find out what's available in your area.

Each year, we also get together with our partners to offer unique donation drives, giving you the chance to drop off your items at retail stores, college campuses and more. Stay tuned to this space for information about new opportunities to donate through our partners.

 Presentation description:

"A Question of Ethics"

The special events industry is relatively young when compared to other industries such as finance, manufacturing and retail.  As such the "rules of the game" are sometimes debated among event industry professionals.  While our industry is unique, generally speaking, business ethics are nearly universal.  In this presentation we will define ethical/unethical and go through examples and scenarios which demonstrate what is empirically right and wrong.  Kevin Molesworth, CSEP Owner, Brass Tacks Events
