San Antonio Tourism Professionals Converge on the Capitol

Members of Alamo Area Hospitality Association, San Antonio Hotel Lodging Association and other San Antonio tourism professionals joined forces on February 13 to Converge on the Texas Capitol. We had the privilege of meeting with Senators, members of the House of Representatives (including House Representative Lyle Larson, see photo above) and their staff and discussing with them the importance of tourism to our city as well as our state.

With one of every eight people employed in tourism in San Antonio, we must do everything we can to continue to stress the importance of tourism to the Texas economy, because "Travel Means Jobs." Click on the link below to watch a great video about the importance of travel to our state.

Thank you to those people who were able to attend the Converge and to those that could not, we hope you can join us next year!

February Luncheon at Sunset Station

Thank you to Sunset Station and RK Group for hosting a fabulous luncheon. The food was delicious and we couldn't have enjoyed it in a more beautiful setting.

Thanks to the February Speaker!

Thank you to Andres Munoz with the San Antonio CVB for talking to our members and luncheon guests about the Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) program.

The San Antonio Tourism Ambassadors Program is designed to provide service professionals with the training necessary to advance their careers, increase business and increase tips. As part of the Tourism Ambassador Institute®, the program provides national certification and can help to set San Antonio apart as a tourism destination. It is applicable to anyone in the service industry, from concierges to taxi drivers and bartenders to docents. The certification includes a four hour class for a minimal investment.

See below for the AAHA sponsored CTA class coming after the March luncheon.

Wonderland, Texas

"Wonderland, Texas," San Antonio's new destination for family fun, includes world-renowned Morgan's Wonderland theme park and its newest neighbor, 8,000-seat Toyota Field, a new multi-purpose stadium and home of the San Antonio Scorpions FC pro soccer team.

Morgan's Wonderland will begin its 2013 season at 10 a.m. Friday, March 1, while the Scorpions will play their first home match against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, April 13.  During spring break, the theme park will be open daily from March 8 through 17.  The latest information on admissions, operating days and hours of operation can be found at www.MorgansWonderland.com.

"Slowly but surely, what once was Longhorn Quarry in Northeast San Antonio is being transformed into a destination focusing on family entertainment, sports, recreational activities, concerts and special events," said Gordon Hartman, CEO of The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation who - along with wife Maggie - have been the catalysts for Wonderland, Texas.  "What's truly remarkable is that everything that happens at Wonderland, Texas, benefits those with special needs."

Net profits from the Scorpions, Toyota Field and the South Texas Area Regional (STAR) Soccer Complex, with 13 top-notch fields for league and tournament play, have been designated to help non-profit Morgan's Wonderland meet its financial obligations as well as expand programs and services for the special-needs community.

This season, the 25-acre park will continue to offer discounts for both active-duty and retired military personnel, season passes and discounted multi-ticket packages.  Admission for those with special needs is always free of charge, while admission fees for accompanying family members, friends, caregivers and the general public are nominal.

For more information on upcoming events, visit www.MorgansWonderland.com.

They're Baaaaack!!

Dinosaurs are back at the Witte Museum − and this time they are bigger, better and more feathered than ever!

Experience the world's largest and most advanced life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, complete skeletons, fossils, hands-on interactives, a paleontological dig site where visitors can unearth fossils as well as the opportunity to explore the most current scientific findings. Created with electronics instead of hydraulics, the animatronic models capture some of the most life-like motions ever created.

Walk amongst a life-sized Allosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Microraptor, Protoceratops, Angustinaripterus, Stegosaurus, Yangchuanosaurus, Omeisaurus, Tuojiangosaurus, Yangchuanosaurus and keep an eye out for "Patty" the Apatosaurus, who at 60 feet long, will meet you in the Witte front yard! Dinosaurs Unearthed highlights the latest discoveries in paleontology, including evidence suggesting some dinosaurs are the ancestors of modern day birds rather than modern reptiles. The story of feathered dinosaurs is an interactive visual spectacle that visitors of all ages can enjoy. The discovery has drawn the fascinating connection between ancient dinosaurs and modern birds. Scientists have found that feathers first evolved as a means of warmth and display and later became specialized to the extent that flight was possible. Don't miss the feathered Juvenile Tyrannosaurus Rex, Gigantoraptor, Velociraptor, Sinosauropteryx and Confuciusornis!

Morgan's Wonderland Seeks Volunteers

Morgan's Wonderland is now actively recruiting volunteers for the 2013 season that begins March 1, according to Frank Martin, volunteer coordinator for the world's first theme park designed with special-needs individuals of all ages in mind.

Those interested in volunteering their time to assist guests, especially those with special needs, can complete an application by visiting www.MorgansWonderland.com

"Volunteers are absolutely vital to our long-term success," Martin said.  "They make up approximately a third of our staffing, and this helps us to continue offering free admission to guests with special needs.  We're trying to make the process of volunteering as easy as possible."

A constant need for volunteers age 16 and older exists at the colorful, 25-acre park, Martin said.  Duties include greeting guests, assisting guests at rides and other attractions and generally "facilitating fun."

"While the majority of our needs are for individual volunteers, groups of 10 to 15 are also needed to assist with grounds-keeping, minor maintenance and other similar functions."

Prospective volunteers can visit the Morgan's Wonderland website for more information or call (210) 495-5888.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants Planning Boutique Hotel at Pearl

Pearl has selected Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants to operate a new four-star boutique hotel at the former brewery site. Silver Ventures, which is redeveloping the Pearl site, will own the hotel and the company has tapped Woodbine Development Corp. to develop the 146-room project.

The new hotel will be located in the former brewhouse, a 119-year-old structure. It's slated to open in the fall of 2014.

Kimpton, which is based in San Francisco, currently operates some 58 hotels and more than 67 restaurants in 24 cities. The San Antonio hotel will be Kimpton's third in Texas. The company also manages Hotel Lumen and Hotel Palomar, both in Dallas. (Hotel Palomar photo above)

"Texas is a great growth market for us and the ability to expand into San Antonio as part of such an iconic property and popular destination is especially thrilling for us," says Kimpton CEO Mike Depatie.

The Pearl hotel will be designed by Roman and Williams.

It will have two new restaurants, a roof-top pool, venue space facing the San Antonio River and a cocktail bar. Developers will construct a new six-story tower behind the original brewhouse building.

"Kimpton is the recognized leader in adaptive reuse development projects such as this," says Elizabeth Fauerso, chief marketing officer at Pearl. "San Antonio is emerging as a hot destination for culinary travel, and Kimpton has a great reputation for both chef-driven restaurants, creative services and amenities and warm, personal service that will take Pearl to a whole new level."

Let's Get to Know...

Name: Carrie Anne Silvers

Title: Director of Sales

Company: Luke San Antonio - A Chef John Besh Restaurant

Phone: 210-424-6255 work, Cell: 210-632-6070

Email: csilvers@chefjohnbesh.com

How long have you been in your position: 1 1/2 years.

What is your favorite San Antonio restaurant? Luke, of course! The biggest beer selection in SA, best Happy Hour and the food is amazing! Food, service, we have it all! If they have servers in Heaven, they were trained at Luke...it is really that good!

Favorite tourist attraction: SeaWorld! My 7 year old loves it!

Favorite adult beverage?  French 75 or Malbec wine.

Favorite SA bar? Bohanan's Bar has amazing cocktails and the bar is a pre-prohibition bar so their specialty is old-time cocktails.

What do you like to do in your free time? I live at the lake so my favorite thing to do is be at home with family and friends enjoying the lake view.

What is the most helpful about your association with AAHA? The people!  I love networking with other hospitality professionals exchanging ideas and sharing best practices.

What can AAHA improve upon?  I would like to see other types of events.  Primarily mixers or dinners at "up & coming" restaurants / hotels.  Also, I think it would be good to partner with other organizations to spotlight certain areas of hospitality.  For instance, why not help the Chef's coalition with their quest to make San Antonio more of a "foodie town?"
